Hosting Account, finally ...
I do not have a registered domain name, e.g. www.example.com, but is it possible to upgrade a subdomain to a domain or to get a domain via Hosting Credits?
When you apply for a hosting account at Astahost or Trap17 most-likely you'll find yourself in one of the following categories:
- You already own a registered domain name, e.g. www.example.com and want to link it with your Astahost hosting account
- You DON'T own a domain - but plan to buy one in near future and when you do, you'd like it to point to your Astahost account.
- You don't have any plans of buying a domain and would be perfectly happy to be hosted on a sub-domain (of your choice & subject to availability) provided by Astahost.
Case 1:
If you already own a domain, you can instantaneously link it to your Astahost or Trap17 account, by setting your domains nameserver entries to point to Astahost. This can be done while creating your hosting account, free of any additional charges.
Case 2:
If you plan to purchase a domain at a later point of time, you can still be hosted under a subdomain provided by Astahost/Trap17, e.g. mysubdomain.astahost.com. Once you've purchased your domain it can be easily linked to your account, in which case your site will be directly accessible via your domain name and the subdomain under which you were hosted earlier on will no longer be valid. You are free to create any number of subdomains of your choice under your own domain name. This Subdomain --> Domain Upgradation costs 15 credits, which are deducted from your Hosting Credit score automatically. However, your Hosting Credits cannot be used to purchase a new domain name nor will Astahost act as a domain registrar for you. Domains must be acquired through a third-party registrar (e.g. XiDomains) on your own.
Case 3:
This is the most common case and I believe 80-90% of the account holders at Astahost have their site happily hosted under this policy. As stated in Case 2, such accounts can be upgraded anytime to a proper domain name at the cost of 15 Hosting Credits pertaining to the fact that you've purchased a domain name through a third-party registrar.
In case at some later point of time you decide to change your hosted subdomain name - such services are also offered at the same price.
NOTE
Astahost DOES NOT offer Domain Registration services and your Hosting Credits CANNOT be used anyhow for purchasing a domain name for your account.
